Fiona Apple has been spending a lot of time explaining her off-beat comments, lately, and now she may have to again. In the November issue of "Interview" magazine, Apple says that she wants to be "the patron saint of reality."
She also tries to explain her speech at from last month's MTV Video Music Awards, where she said, "This world is bulls***, and you shouldn't model your life about what you think that you think we think is cool, and what we're wearing, and what we're saying and everything. Go with yourself." Later that night in an interview, Apple immediately began explaining the speech: "I think that what I'm saying right now has way too much effect on people that are watching it. I think that everybody that like listens to what I say, and what Gwen Stefani says, and what Madonna says, and what everybody says that gets up there on that stage... I can only speak to young girls, like when they look up to them... I know because I was just on the outside. This happened so fast for me that I know. I can remember what my perspective was before I was part of this world, when I was on the other side of it," she says. "I thought that everything on this side of the world was a higher quality of living, and like everybody knew what was cool, and knew what was right, and knew what was the good thing to say, and I compared myself to them, you know. I judged myself based on those standards that I saw in the media, and I just thought it had way too much control, so I just wanted to say something about it." In November's issue of "Interview," Fiona says after seeing herself on the Awards, "I realized, wow, I do kind of come off a bit intense. Some people said I made an ass of myself. I almost feel it's my duty to make an ass out of myself in public, just to prove you can take risks." "Interview" will be out at the end of the month.

Apple is the cover girl on the November issue of "Spin" magazine. In this issue, she says, "It's psychologically and chemically impossible for me to be happy," and that "I know I'm going to die young." In the same article, Fiona's mother declares her "my candle-burning vampire child who stays up all night long and gets phone messages from Marilyn Manson. Every mother's dream." "Spin" is out on October 10. |
