Everclear Frontman Starts His Own Label

[11-01-97 Sat] This doesn't mean he's about to give up working with his band, Everclear, but frontman Art Alexakis has now started his own record label. He insists the label, called Popularity Recordings, will not stop him from writing, recording, and performing with Everclear.

The record label will be distributed by another major label, though, not by Capitol Records, which releases Everclear's albums. "It'll cause some tension," Alexakis admits, adding that Everclear will still stick with Capitol Records. "I love the business," he says about his decision to start the label. "I think it's fun. I like all those other aspects that come with making the records . . . And I think it would be fun to work with other bands."

Currently, Alexakis is touring with Everclear in support of the trio's new album, So Much for the Afterglow, the follow-up to their 1995 platinum album, Sparkle and Fade. "We used the same criteria we had on the last record; we wanted to make a record we thought was perfect for the time," Alexakis says of the new album. "I'm sure subconsciously we felt like we had to come up with something that was as good or better, at least in our own minds. Nobody was pushing us like, 'Okay, you guys have got to come through.' We just assumed that we would, and I feel like we did."
