Green Day Tour Opener Classic

[11-03-97 Mon] Green Day kicked off their tour last Thursday (Oct 30), and it showed to be a classic Green Day show. The band kicked off its tour in Dallas, where a reporter says they didn't take themselves seriously, although he did say that the music was hard to resist. At the show, they played their older hits from their first four albums, including Dookie and their not-as-good-as-expected Insomniac, as well as new stuff from Nimrod.

Frontman Billie Joe Armstrong was his usual quiet self (yeah right!). "This is a song about drugs," he said just before the band played "Geek Stink Breath." "And you're not supposed to do them." Moments later, he announced: "You know what? I'm drunk." Also, Billie Joe splashed the crowd with bottled water, let a teenage girl come onstage to play a few chords, and played with an Elmo doll. It wouldn't be Green Day show without this ending. Tre Cool, of course, knocked his drums to the floor and Billie Joe left his guitar screeching the same repeating chord as the band left the stage.

"Mr. Armstrong is the consummate pop performer," says the Dallas writer.
