MTV Europe Awards Wrap-Up

[11-08-97 Sat] Prodigy took home most of the awards last Thursday night in Holland. They won the awards of Best Video for "Breathe," Best Dance and Best Alternative. "Winning these awards is really cool, you know, but it won't go to our heads. It will always be raw and it will always be real. You know that," said Prodigy frontman Keith Flint as the band accepted an award on the stage.

The Spice Girls were given the biggest award, winning against the all-male competition for the Best Group Award. Spice Girl Emma stumbled on her high heels during the band's performing of "Spice Up Your Life," and appeared to be shaky while going on stage to accept their award. "I nearly slipped up again, when I was walking up here! I am going right off these boots," she said.

The British group Oasis won Best Rock Act. The band was on their tour at the time, so they were not physically present at the Awards. Liam Gallagher (on screen) put on a "comic posh voice," saying, "Thank you for being so kind and voting for us," then was his old self again and muttered "cheers" while the rest of the band smiled from behind him at the tour.

The winners were chosen by the channel's 800-strong academy, made up of 400 important figures from the European music industry, including record label heads, retailers, agents and promoters. Performers at the Awards were U2, LL Cool J, Bjork, Blackstreet with Guns 'n' Roses guitarist Slash, Skunk Anansie, Backstreet Boys, Aerosmith and Jon Bon Jovi.

Here's some of the other winners:

  • Best Male: Jon Bon Jovi
  • Best Female: Janet Jackson
  • Best Live Act: U2
  • Best Song: Hanson's "MMMBop"
