[11-12-97 Wed] All day Tuesday contradicting reports were coming from Philadelphia concerning the status of Metallica's free concert at the Corestates Complex parking lot. There were reports that fans would be able to get in even if they didn't have a ticket. But, despite (see also Judge Rules On Metallica Concert) the protest of locals and councilmen about traffic, sanitation, security, and noise, the free show went on in the lot, and apparently without any problems. About 300 police officers were patrolling for crowd control, twice as many than for an average Eagles game, when around 65,000 football fans use the same complex.
Also, Metallica not only had to pay a $20,000 rental fee for the lot, but the "Philadelphia Inquirer" reports that the promoters had to pay the city somewhere in the neighborhood of $80,000 for the labor needed to stage the show
