Smashing Pumpkins Touring Drummer Leaves

[11-14-97 Fri] Matt Walker, the former Filter drummer who was been the recent Smashing Pumpkins drummer, has left the band to work with his own rock band. Walker has played with the band for the last two years, since the time during the Pumpkins' 1996 Mellon Collie tour when drummer Jimmy Chamberlin was fired for his continued drug use. Walker then joined the band to act as drummer during the tour, and then stayed a little longer. He has now left to persue his own rock band, the Cupcakes, which recently signed a record deal with DreamWorks Records.

"Matt is a tremendous talent and we wish him all the best and much success with his band," the Pumpkins said in an official statement on Friday. "We are very grateful that he has helped us so much." It is still unknown who will now become the permanent drummer, or maybe even another temporary drummer, like Walker was. While Walker toured with the Pumpkins over the past two years, his only recording with the band is "The End Is The Beginning Is The End," the Pumpkins' latest single which was on this summer's Batman and Robin soundtrack.

The Pumpkins are continuing to work in the studio on the follow-up to the eight-time platinum selling double album Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness.
