[12-15-97 Mon] Universal Concerts Canada, Marilyn Manson's promotion company, won a court case on Wednesday against a Calgary venue manager over the cancellation of one of the band's concerts last July. Larry Ryckman must pay the concert company a currently undecided amount of money in damages because of an indident in which Ryckman would not let Manson perform at the Max Bell Arena. He said that the band's lyrics were offensive and his stage show and album covers were obscene. He declared that Marilyn Manson would never play in his arena.
The promoters claimed that they had ahead of time told the venue that Manson was a controversial artist who had heated up religious rights groups, but the band was booked anyway. The band was then told only two weeks before the concert that they had been pulled from the arena.
A separate hearing will be forthcoming to determine the amount of damages to be paid. However, the promoters will probably not get much more than Rychman's $35,000 deposit. The deposit was given to the courts right before the canceled performance to prevent Universal from getting an injunction that would have let the show go on.
